As big of Freddy fan that I am, I much prefer him being the dark, scary type evil villain. He was pretty scary and mean in the first two. The 3rd movie was very good, but he started to get funny then. It makes for a sick type villain who laughs at you and cracks jokes while he kills you, but stick to the bad ass stuff. Freddy is still considered one of the most powerful villains because of his psychic powers in the dream world though. I think the remake needs to portray him as the evil, sick, twisted villain he actually is.

As far as the current franchise .... I loved them all, but I rank them like this:

1) Nightmare on Elm Street 1
2) Nightmare on Elm Street 3
3) Nightmare on Elm Street 2
4) Nightmare on Elm Street 4
5) New Nightmare
6) Nightmare on Elm Street 5
7) Freddys Dead the final nightmare

Remake

I would have to agree that the original, and following chapters are pretty comedic, but that gives it its own nich I suppose....New Nightmare is pretty dark, and I would like to see the "nightmare" remake go there!

All Things Elm Street.

I liked part 1 & 3 the best, but I also enjoyed all the others as well.

Only films I've seen of the series as of today; are...
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
2. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985)
3. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
and if you want to count Freddy Vs. Jason (2003) then by all means, go ahead. still somewhat part of this particular horror franchise. yes?
I am stoked for seeing the rest of the horror movie in the franchise along with the upcoming remake in April of 2010. : )

I've seen all of the following:

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
New Nightmare (1994)
Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

I still haven't seen:

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)
A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989)

But, now that a remake is coming out, I'll have to break my own rule and watch the series from the start including the ones I've never seen.

You've got to be a fan of cheese. The Freddy movies after part one started to get cheesier. I don't mind because I like cheese.:coolcool:

1. Nightmare on Elm Street
2. New Nightmare
3. Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
4. Nightmare on Elm Street 5: Dream Child
5. Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master
6. Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge
7. Freddy vs. Jason
8. Nightmare on Elm Street (remake)
9. Freddy's Dead

Spots 4-6 are fluid, depending on how I feel, but the top three and the bottom three are set permenantly.
