Dead Waters (aka Dark Waters)
I liked it, but recommend with extreme reservations. This is ONLY for those of you who enjoy slow, brooding flicks. The surprise is that the acting is actually pretty good. The directing was maddening, I've never seen such cool lighting and framing combined with an awful sense of space. The images are really cool, but the sense of motion and ones place in this world is non-existant. It could very well be a stylistic choice - it does create a sence of claustrophobia - but it reeks of a lack of technical skill in the director. All in all I liked it... 6.8/10

So, the big plan of watching what you guys pick didn't exactly happen. Had a few friends come over, and I decided to go with what they wanted to watch.
Over the Hedge The last few CGI flicks I watched (The Wild, Madagascar) haven't been that good. In fact, I turned off The Wild halfway through... just couldn't handle the overplayed "father and son" storyline (but I mentioned this before). Over the Hedge was actually quite good, and I can't say I didn't enjoy it. It was a very entertaining movie, and had some hillarious scenes in it. Great voice work too, Avril Lavigne was a bit of a suprise to see listed in the cast, well, alongside all those other well-recognized names; but her part was small, and she didn't do too bad. Wanda Sykes and Steven Carrell = amazing as always. Reccomended for fans of whacky animation. Heartstopper Ah, Canadian talent; in a B-grade movie nonetheless. Suprised they killed off Robert Englund so quickly (not actually a spoiler since it has little relavence to the plot). It was cheesy as hell (ripping out hearts, still beating; tattoos that move across flesh; soul-transferring; a whirlwind that sends people back to the underworld?), and had terrible effects (think something ALMOST as bad as drawn-in lightning effects), but it wasn't that bad. A fun little romp. No twists, it's doesn't redefine the genre, it's not something you NEED to see, but if you do decide to pick it up, it's not a complete waste. We certainly had a good time watching it, mainly laughing. The killer actually gave me a slight chill, simply for his sheer presence. So overpowering, and the thought of being with him alone, what can you do? Nothing, your vistually screwed. His acting was terrible, and his LINES... OH GOD. Some biblical passages, with faux-poetry and terrible ryhming mixed all together. Over the Hedge: B+ Heatstopper: C- |
