Don't Listen (aka Voces) is one of those recent films that cements Spain's reputation as a strong country when it comes to horror. Is that reputation co-cemented by Netflix? Perhaps. Once you are down the rabbit hole and all... But when it comes to content (REC, La Influencia, Veronica,...), one must admit that there definetily is something there.

The actors do a good job and the jump scares really work. Where lesser filmmakers use them as a cheap ploy, these grab you because they genuinely come from out of nowhere.

It also leaves me wondering about the themes in this film. On how much they reflect Spanish culture and the influence of religion. One main theme there is the Spanish Inquisition. Another that comes up here (and in La Influencia as well) is the importance of family. Is this a subconscious consequence of growing up in a society where Catholics present the family as a cornerstone of society? And how big is the taboo on suicide ina country like Spain?

The scene with the writer at the kitchen table takes a bit of the speed out of the story. I can see what they are trying to do there, how the ghost/witches uses your fears and traumas against you, but one cannot help but ask how such an experienced man can fall for this. But that is really the only point of criticism.

Overall, an enoyable with a few suprises and some good scares. Well recommended.

RACCOON VALLEY 2018

A deaf woman is left to fend for herself after the small town she lives in is evacuated after a military plane crashes into the water supply. The plane is carrying a chemical which infects those who drink it, making them ill and very contagious.

Different and pretty good.

Thumb resize.

8/10

Must be my first Asian found footage and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. I did not expect much, but the scares were really smart done and the characters really delivered, all of them.
Reminded me of Grave Encounters.

Fun fact: They wanted to film it in the actual place in Gonjiam, but the South Korean guv. refused and they did it in Busan, but making the place as close as they could.

Assault on Precinct 13

Not sure if this is good as a remake, but it is enjoyable as an action flick in itself. And the cast does its job.

A thoroughly unnecessary remake. Director didn't do it much different. If maybe Brad Bird made it super crafty, or Quentin Tarantino had a lot of fun rewriting it...
