When my wife was delivering our fisrt child. The labor was insanely long - 18 hours - and she was exhausted. When Folsom was born, we were overjoyed - until I saw the expression on the doctor's face.
My wife's uterus wasn't contracting like it should and she was hemorrhaging. It was a mess. Blood soaked the bed and ran on the floor. What little color was in her face was quickly draining away. They stitched her up (no drugs - just like the crazy long labor) and stabalized her, but the doctor told me that it was "a close one."
