Last week, bf and I watched the Planet of the Apes box set:

Planet of the Apes;
Beneath the Planet of the Apes;
Escape from the Planet of the Apes;
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes;
and Battle for the Planet of the Apes.

Really enjoyable, and not as cheesy as I initially thought they were going to be, the last one being the weakest of the 5.

Days of Wine and Roses (1962)

Last year I watched The Lost Weekend (because I'm a big Wilder fan) and was very impressed, so I decided to catch a few more famous movies on alcoholism. I saw this Blake Edwards film a few days after and it made The Lost Weekend look like Snow White.

While Wilder's film makes a nice ctitique of alcohol abuse in America, Edwards presented a dark, hepless, abysmal crack at it. Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick honestly scare the shit out of me in this, and Lemmon's take has to be one of the best (and certainly his finest) performances I've ever seen.

See this film.
Will do!

I'll be on the lookout for this one for sure...sounds fantastic. Thanks!

Interesting.

How do you rate Burton's remake?

Total crap and completely unnecessary. I barely even remember Burton's remake, while the original is something that will stay with you for a while.

Funny how a movie 30 years older is technically superior in all aspects when compared to the more sophisticated remake.

And I am not talking about the effects.

Taken

Ass-kicking good times. It rides the line between rightous intentions and brutal violence with a sure-handed ease. The scripting is tight, the lensing is fantastic and Liam Neeson is a genuine badass - I would not want him to hit me.

I can see this making it to my top 11 of '09 list.

8.5/10

Farewell, Friend (Honor Amongst Theives) 1968

Charles Bronson and Alain Delon are stuck in a safe during a robbery, where they try to unravel just who it is that fucked them over and why.

Good tough-guy stuff with a cool, mod vibe, but the plot is a bit ridiculous... could use a remake ;)
6.5/10

You thinking of venturing away from the horror genre?

My partern and I write horror, thriller, crime, scifi, fight flicks and have even tried our hand at a contemporary Samurai screenplay - you know all the geeky shit. But we'll always return to horror - it's just so much fucking fun!

Going to have to pen a western soon.
