My response was very tongue-in-cheek. But you know it's true.

Oh also ferretchucker you should try and get hold of Ken Russell's The Devils. There are characters in that who make that character in The Mist look like a saint. Sadly its banned in the UK and I doubt it will ever be released in DVD. The only likable characters are Oliver Reed and the woman he likes. Its full of scenes of masterful cinematography and adequately portrays the extremes of human greed and prejudices. Yes it takes things to the extreme (obviously censors think too far) but it saddens me that a film that so wholeheartedly captures the essences of insanity and miscarriages of justice will be seen by so few people.

@neverending - thank you for pointing out The Devils DVD. I checked Amazon about a month ago and it wasn't there. It's one of those films I've come around to really liking after initially dismissing it. Also, I watched a film recently called Mother Joan Of The Angels which seems to take place shortly after the events in The Devils. It's not graphic, but still very haunting and disturbing.

One of the best villains ever IMO, she made you want to reach out and strangle her.

Characters I despise?
Well... any character who escape the slaughter, e.g: children in the latest Piranhas (II 3D). Too bad for them to slip to safety... Besides, horror characters are usually so cartoonish and artificial I do not feel the identification whatever the hero... And I do not like the hero nor dislike the villain. Many horror films rely on the body count and boobies shots, which is a good move, because most of them are boring if we take off these two elements. Or we slip out of the " B movie" specification to enter the land of fantastic films much more horror: "Cat people" (by Tourneur) or a fantastic film based on "the turn of the screw". However it seems difficult to get identified with the hero, and difficult to despise the villain. Have a nice day to all! L. |
