Couldn't agree more-I really felt sorry for him as an actor because I can imagine how much hell inside himself he had to draw upon to perform some of those scenes. He reminded me of David Thewlis' mancunian vagabond character in Mike Leigh's "Naked". Unforgettable.

Not seen any Trakovsky films but will look them up. I loved Dogtooth and Hidden-not seen Seventh Continent but what did you think of Benny's Video?

Finally saw Benny's Video (1992) by Austrian director Michael Haneke (Funny Games, Hidden, The Piano Teacher). Luckily I knew nothing about the film before I saw it. Had I known about it there's no way I would have watched it. I'm really in a huge dilemma with this film. It starts with a video of animal slaughter which I abhor with all my heart BUT I didn't switch it off there and then instead watched the rest of it basically because I know I will encounter similar scenes by accident in the future (maybe I should try to desensitize myself). It turns out that this is extremely important to the plot and character development. I just despise such manipulative tactics like this. However the film is very well done, bleak, stark, genuinely upsetting and very effective in the points it makes. Bottom line is I will never watch this film again nor recommend it to anyone because of that scene (which is repeated again later in the film) but that is my personal choice and view, I completely understand how this film could be very well liked, even enjoyed by some regardless of that scene. Challenging stuff.

Funny, it goes to show how your taste changes...I remember seeing a preview on a VHS for this movie and thinking WOW it looks awesome.
Then I watched it, I must have been maybe 13?
I didn't actually like it.
Maybe it was that I didn't really have an understanding of what was going on, though I had no fond memory whatsoever of this movie, in fact I remember being pretty disappointed.

Yknow, I actually quite enjoyed this - kind of similar to another one of my sci-fi action favourites of around that time (Total Recall) though doesn't really fall at all into "rip off" territory.
It was a cool idea, lots of twists and turns, and a damn trippy ending.
Glad that I had the random inclination to check it out again.

Freejack is good fun. Jagger played surprisingly well.

Out of those types of movies, the AU series is probably the best (at least from what I've viewed). But I guess I do just prefer things to be more plot driven. Probably the same reason I don't really dig porno. It's nice to see a bunch of T&A, but sitting through more than an hour of it straight, it tends to get rather tedious and redundant.

That's interesting, because I feel like he does something that very few other filmmakers can do, and that he does touch some part of me that very few other filmmakers do.

I'm a Haneke fan, too. Hidden was amazing. Did you see The Piano Teacher?
Dogtooth was absolutely brilliant. One of my favorite films of that year. Can't wait to see what that director does next.

Yeah, absolutely. Interesting comparison between those two performances, too.
Michael Shannon was actually in the play before William Friedkin adapted it.

While I'm not about the jump on he bandwagon, it was a solidly entertaining film with a soundtrack I enjoyed.
