One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - a striking, violent criticism of modern society and one of the most powerful novels ever written.
Versus Lord of the Rings, a convoluted mess of plotlines and high-fantasy nonsense that were made into an equally convoluted (though far more entertaining) series of films. I think you know my vote.

Truly magical. Return- you have no soul. Sorry to vote against home town boy though. Had the distinct pleasure to meet Kesey a few times.
