Actually the Hungarian film Drakula halala (1921), aka The Death of Dracula, was the first adaptation of Bram Stokers Dracula.

It actually doesnt have much in common with the supposed source material...the name of a character, thats it. It's about a music teacher that is tormented by a mental patient.

It does have more in common with the vampire character "Dracula" than just the name. He does live in a castle and claim to be immortal. Mary does repel him with a crucifix and his 12 evil brides when he tries to marry her during a black magic marriage ceremony. Later, he tries again to acquire her through the powers of hypnosis. True, it's not Stokers story "Dracula", but there are enough similarities between the Dr. and a vampire to be considered, IMO, the first adaptation, but not the closest telling of the story "Dracula".
