Brian Keene
I went to a book signing thing the other day to get a copy of a book i really like signed by the author. anyway, the signing had a bunch of people and one guy was really totally cool and had a bunch of books so I bought the first in a zombie series of his.
the writer was Brian Keene, who another fanboy in the crowd explained to me was a pretty big name in horror fiction (which to be honest i don't read a lot of horror fiction so was totally ignorant of that fact). anyway, i've started reading this first zombie book The Rising and its really pretty good. at times a bit derivative of King's The Stand but overall I'm impressed. anyone else read this guy?

I have The Rising & the sequel City of the Dead, but unfortunately, I haven't had the spare time to actually start reading either one of them yet. By all accounts, they are gory and awesome though.

The Rising, at least, is pretty damn good. I'm going to go buy the sequel today, so I'll comment on that one when I'm finished. His other novel, The Conqueror Worms, is excellent as well. It's a very interesting take on an apocalyptic scenario.
Zero, I really don't see how The Rising is derivative of The Stand. If anything, I'd say it's more similar to McCammon's Swan Song than anything else. Why do you say that it is?

i picked up The Rising and City of the dead from Bill Keene as well - at the festival of fear 2005.
nice guy - i wanted to like the books more than i did - but they didnt do anything to make me come back to horror fiction. got a couple from Jack Ketchum this year and WAS impressed. this guy is a good writer .. no nonsense and brutal... a much better grasp of dialogue than almost any ofher writer of horror fiction i've read ... |

well, as i said (or should have said) i'm not big into horror fiction so my knowledge is limited here. i just thought the whole end of the world and few stragglers making their way together felt like the Stand. really, as i've read more it feels like lots of Romero film bits stuck together.
but, that said, i'm enjoying it and as URGE said, Keene was a really cool dude
