Begotten
I was looking up Silent Hill 2's Theme for Laura" to play on guitar and came across this movie. I heard it was boring but from What I saw it was FREAKY.
Someone Put together music from Silent Hill 3 with this movie Called Begotten. I know if I ever saw this movie it won't be like how the guy made the video(the music with the very beggining is just eerie) Anyway Go to youtube and Type begotten silent hill 3 and tell me what you think. I heard the movie was Rare. For anyone who HAS seen this tell me what you thought. |

This movie is disturbing!
Though some loves this movie, I personally don't like it. |

Nice coincidence. I saw this "thing" about 5 months ago, in it's entirety. Have to agree with the review, it's not much of a watch, just a series of disturbing images. It instantly reminded me of a German flick, "Der Todesking" which was pretty much formatted the same way. Both are basically "Mondo" flicks, without the monotonous narration. Rent Faces of Death and cut to the chase.

I think half the point (and the charm) of a lot of Mondos (and I don't mean TRACES OF DEATH) is the fact that tryed to convince you that they WERE more than cheap exploitation. They touted themselves as 'education' - Faces of Death was a journey into the mystery of mortality. Yeah of course it was nothing more than a string of staged events/stock footage but the narration tryed to tell it to us as if it was much much more. Same with Africa Addio - of course its all the exploitative footage that Jacopetti and Prosperi could get but its delivered as a sermon of the duality of Africa and how savage and beautiful it can be at the same time. This for me is why I love the Mondo genre - its exploitation at its finest. Its selling point is also what its trying to condemn....Its not about which has the gorest footage but how its presented. Thats why I find Traces of Death boring but I still like the pseudo intellectual crap of Faces of death enertaining - the face they;re trying to pass off the executions as real adds to the charm. I cannot see how some some one describe "Der Todesking" as a Mondo film. |

i'm not necessarily a huge fan of the mondo films, but i guess i misspoke. i see your point, and yes, i suppose mondos were different from your general exploitation fare in that they claimed to be educational. however, this is exploitation in its purest form.
really, my only point is that the mondos are exploitation, where as begotten is not, and that it shouldn't be tossed into the same category. and yeah, der todesking is certainly different than a mondo film, too.

To clarify my statement a little better, I mean these films offer up shocking or disturbing visuals, without much connection via storyline or plot. Not that they are docs. I think the Mondos did have a certain bit of quality behind them, tho. The music(More) from Cane is one of the more memorable songs to come out of cinema. And films like Ecco and Sadismo are of cult status. I think they serve as some sort of connection between actual documentary and the modern "reality" info-tainment we have today. Der Todesking(from what I remember, it's probably been better than 10 years since I saw it) was 7 disjointed stories about death, spread out over the course of 7 days. There were no heroes to root for, no real story to follow, no suspenseful twists and turns, really no ending or beginning. In that way, I found Begotten to be similar. I don't know if I'd call them horror flix tho(they did have horrific images, but than so does Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan). They're more in a gray area, I would call arthouse surrealism. I'd probably lump them together with Un Chien Andalou, El Topo, Salo:120 Days of Sodom, Alphaville and Eraserhead. Disturbing, bizarre.....but you don't really know what's going on. I don't necessarily think they are bad films(they're better than I could make), but they are not films I'd care to watch more than once. Last edited by Festered; 09-11-2008 at 03:39 PM. |
