Wasn't too impressed actually. It's his worst film. Wonderful ending though.

I agree... Definitely not that great of a movie. It seemed whatever message that was created in the book wasn't passed along to the movie at all. Some of the imagry was nice, but I started to wonder if I wasn't just watching a movie that was nothing but Eye Candy a good hour into it.

Oh yeah... I wasn't aware that Big Fish was a modern horror movie.

I thought so frequently swapping actors playing the father (with two different acting styles at that) destroyed any sort of bond between viewer and character.

I wouldn't go quite so far as to say it was his worst film. I mean, Planet of the Apes had fuckin Marky Mark in it!!!! But, I would say it was his second-worst. There were lots of things I didn't like about it, but here are some things I did:
1. first off, it was filmed in and around Auburn, AL where I went to college. so that was good. on top of that, several of my friends were extras and it was fun to find them walking around in the background.

2. second, as I am from the South, I am completely enamored with anything even remotely related to southern gothic mythos. The catfish was the perfect symbol of that mysterious, wilderness side of the South that in people's minds may or may not have ever existed.

3. There really were several good Burton-esque scenes. Namely, when the kid is caught up in the growing contraption on his bed. Edward Scissorhands could have related with that.

Here's just a couple (of the many) things I didn't like about it:
1. bad fake accents. this is my number one pet peeve for movies set in the south. Epitomized by any John Grisham based movie, it still lives on in pieces of shit like Cold Water, Big Fish, etc...

2. typical Hollywood motion picture score. I hate movies that purposefully try to manipulate people's emotions and nothing says that a movie is trying that like a big sweeping movie score. Get real, Tim. we don't need cheesy music to tell us which parts are sad and which are happy. Where's the Elfman when you most need him??? maybe Tim Burton should be set back to a more limited budget and he wouldn't crank out such overdramatic tripe.

3. damn near no characterization. the dad was the only round character in the whole film. period.

I could go on and on with the pros and cons here...

so, all in all, I felt like it was good for Hollywood (i.e. Rush Hour 2), but terrible for Tim Burton. I guess it really is all about the Benjamins...

I loved it. Save Identity, it was the best movie all year.

Although I haven't seen Lost in Translation, Monster or American Splendor yet.

I'd have to say that was a pretty bold statement. In my book, it's no where near the best movie of the year. Just because you see a lot of enjoyable eye candy doesn't mean you can look deeper into the film... If you do that, you'll see something that is lacking, that said depth.

Identity was pretty good for a major hollywood release though.

I didn't like it for the eye candy. The eye candy was good, yes, but the movie its self was great. Performances, writing, directing, cinematography, music, I don't care about depth. In MY book, second best movie of the year.
