music box massacre 3

so i went to the music box masscare 3 this weekend at the music box theatre in chicago. it's a 24 hour horror movie marathon hosted in a super old theatre. the lineup was pretty great and it was a ton of fun.

1. the cat and the canary- fun silent movie. they have an old organ still in the theatre, so a guy actually played while the movie was being shown.

2. freaks- no comment needed. a good print with the "hans regrets what he did" ending removed.

3. abbott and costello meet frankensten- another classic that was incredible to see on the big screen.

4. equinox- so-so print of a mostly boring and reaaaally cheesy monster (stop motion animation) film. this one was fun to watch because of the non-stop laughter it brought everyone there.

5. peeping tom- oh this was so spectacular. a great print of a completely wonderful film.

6. halloween 3: season of the witch- the totally preposterous "classic" was definitely fun to watch on the big screen. everyone would suddenly burst into clapping the rhythm for the silver shamrock halloween mask theme every time it played (all 9999999 times).

7. monster squad- i hadn't seen this in about 10 years but was reminded why i loved it so much when i was little. it was a total blast to watch. fred dekker was even there to do a meet and greet/q and a session with us.

8. demons 2- another fun one by lamberto bava. coralina cataldi-tassoni (the main demon in the film) was also there to meet and greet/q and a.

9. videodrome- the cronenberg classic was really intense, being loud and huge on the screen. another really great print, too.

10. the raven- i don't think i need to write anything about this one either. again, great quality print.

11. it's alive- this movie is really depressing to me for some reason. a pretty good print. ugh, and the noise the baby makes was nearly unbearable being that loud.

12. dead of night/deathdream- a mostly forgotten film from bob clark (children shouldn't play with dead things, black christmas) about a boy that returns home from vietnam as a zombie. not bad, definitely worth the watch (although it was probably better watching it in a theatre).

13. the demonology of desire- a mostly worthless (despite a few laughs) short film from rodrigo gudiņo, the guy who makes rue morgue magazine.

14. the shining- goodness. it was like i'd never even seen the movie before. the print looked really good. i'm not sure what else to say other than if you ever get the chance to see this in a theatre, do it, do it, do it.

so that was it. in-between the movies they had trailers too, for movies like : theatre of blood, suspiria, repulsion, sisters, the losers, blacula, the exorcist, etc. which was wonderful.
anyway, it was an incredible time. anyone who is/was on the fence about going, definitely go next year.

speaking of, did anyone here go? if so, what did you think?

I was planning on being there, but ran into some financial trouble, and couldn't get over there. I'm usually always at the big Music Box events...great theatre.
I'm glad you had fun- there was a good line up this year.
(I hope you went early...you can always get cool free shit. I got a free Children of Men t-shirt last time I was there.)

The theatre is absolutely gorgeous- very big, very elegant. I love going there.
And, as has been discussed, they put on great events for dirt cheap. And they always have guests, no matter how miniscule.

I saw Inland Empire there, but accidentally got tickets the day before David Lynch came! Still fun, though.
