Quakes, DOOM, Half-Lifes, and FEAR

I decided I wanted to BS about my favorite shit your pants games.

The first two quakes were great. Even though i do love the mostly sci-fi feel o fthe second one, good Ol' Quake is by far my long-standing favorite. i wish they would remake, or continue the techno-gothic story line. It had such a unique feel to it.

Quake 2 was great also, just not quite ion the same level to me. i guess there is more story fodder with the strogg war, but i missed the fiends and shamblers. Of course, the heavily armed brains in tanks, and the rail-gun carrying gladiators kinda made up for them...

Doom was always a favorite. It really scared the crap out of me in several places. i hated the areas that had strobe lights, and the Phantoms running around (the invisible pinky demons). Doom 2 carried it on pretty well, but was mostly just an all out war agaisnt HUNDREDS of demons.

Doom 3... Well, i haven finished it yet (still), but it scares the piss out of me.

The half-life games are incredible. not scary all the way through, but when they want to scare you, they make it count.

So Far, FEAR is the scariest thing i have ever played. Never Mind Alma and Paxton showing up out of nowhere in psychic visions, but the dream sequences.... blood, babies crying and not being able to actually run sometimes proves to be too much.

Condemned: Criminal Origins

I think it's out on the PC now so you can get a taste of greatness. :)

FEAR is pretty unreal.

Resident always scared me when i used to play it on my 'rents bigscreen with the lights off and sound cranked back in the day. my mom would even watch me play sometimes and jump at the parts where the dogs would bust through the windows etc...

Agreed on the first 2 quakes.
1 was great...so atmospheric...for me, it was the first TRULY 3d fps I played, and at the time seemed to really draw me in much more. Very effective soundtrack, good amount of gore, and some real freakout moments (like getting dropped on the first shambler you encounter...), good stuff.
The second I didn't really find that scary, but very intense, really got the blood pumping with some of the shootout scenes, still challenging to get through.

Two that I played, not horror...that I found particularly scary, were
"ww2 GI", graphically not much better than, say, blood...but, there were so many snipers and ambushes...I guess you'd have to have played it to know what I mean, but you felt very surrounded.
Call of Duty - I've only played through the first one, but just how REAL it seems...the firefights are just fucked up and chaotic, the effects are great and the sound iss unbelievable, I've said this before, but on numerous occasions I played this one, I had to just take a break because for me, it seemed to get to me...kind've walked away from the game feeling a little shellshocked every time, it's a hell of an experience.

One called "shade - wrath of angels" freaked me out some...played like indiana jones meets evil dead. Very neat "jumps" and mindfucks here and there.

Nosferatu - the wrath of malakai was pretty cool, with it's oldskool "film" look, nice ambient sound effects and some very cool beasts and bosses. Otherwise,
not that much of a great game, but could fill you with a sense of impending doom.

The little lapses in reality in FEAR really remind me of Breakdown, another game that was creepy and just plain out there.

Doom 3 has the creatures and the non-stop action but I really believe that Revenloft is the scariest area of any FPS. I haven't beat FEAR but that small part of HL2 will be etched into my memory as one of the most brilliant "horror themed" areas of any game. Only by length however does it beat out running around in the dark trying to stay safe from zombies while waiting for the elevator...

This one seems obvious, but...I honestly think that "Clive Barkers - Undying" was one of the scarier games I'd ever played. Plays like you're inside a horror movie. The ghosts and mindfucks here and there are just great. The skies, the weather, the scenery and oldskool castles 'n shit...it all just comes together and "works" and as a damn fine horror experience.

Also...fahrenheit (indigo prophecy) was kind've grim and scary...there was some ANNOYING scenes, but really had the whole supernatural "feel" down to an art. Very cool, tense, and scary in parts.

Half-Life 2 is one of my favourites. Not scary, but the graphics are incredible - I believe this is still the case even though it has been out a while now. The textures, colours, and effects seem to work together so well. The other thing is that I have been playing Counterstrike for so long that the controls and movements just seem natural, and this makes it hard to feel as comfortable in other FPS games. (I know you can remap keys, but quite often not all controls are exact equivalents).

FEAR has excellent atmosphere, and is SO much better since I upgraded my system. My old system (P4 3.2, 1gig, 7800gtx) couldn't quite do it justice, but now being able to turn all the eye candy on and have it at fast frame rates all the time makes it an amazing experience. Combat seems more challenging than in HL2, for me anyway.
