John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns

Give your reviews on John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns

When I first started watching it, I was already liking the movie. I knew I'd like it from the beginning because it was John Carpenter. This was the best blind buy ever. If you haven't seen Cigarette Burns, go out and buy it. It is great and listening to the commentary is also good. It all starts with Kirby going to this guy's house, he is a rare film collector. Kirby is paid $200,000 to go find a movie, La Fin Absolut Du Mond AKA... The Absolute end of the world. The film only showed once and the whole audience went mad and killed eachother. Kirby gets a review from a guy, Myers, and he listens to the tape and when it's over, he starts to see these Cigarette burns. They are orangeish rings he sees constantly. And Kirby goes through hell to find the movie. And when he gets it in columbia, he goes back and gives it to the guy. The guy pais him. The Climax is great. But the only disappointment in the movie is the actual film they watch that drives you crazy. It isn't good at all. John carpenter says in the commentary that he wishes he never showed the film and left it up to the audience to think what it is. But if the film wouldn't of showed this film, I'd give it a 10/10. But They showed the film and it could of been better and it is like THE RING but better. And don't let that ruin it for you, just because it is like the ring. It is WAY better because it's John Carpenter. so I gave it a 9.9/10. Good job Carpenter. Maybe you should make Cigarette burns a Full length movie, like they did with the short of SAW.

9.9/10.

I agree that Cigarette Burns was a good purchase (espescially if its on sale).

I also agree that they should never have shown the actual "film". Who the hell made THAT decision? For Carpenter (or anyone else) to say that the movie wouldn't have worked if the didn't show the film just indicates a lack of imagination on the part of whoever said it. But since they made the (wrong) decision to show the film, then the least they could have done was make the damned thing interesting. The tape in "The Ring" was more disturbing than that garbage.

By the way, I wonder if the flashes of "cigarette burns" that we see in the movie are supposed to remind me of The Ring, or if that was just coincidence.

But then the whole idea of a "film that drives people crazy" isn't the most original in the world. I like this treatment of it, though. It kinda reminded me of the end of "In the Mouth of Madness" ...and I mean that in a good way.

Most stand-out scene? What the film collector does at the end. Even though I could kinda guess what he was up to behind that projector, when he actually DID it I was like... whoa...

Overall, I give it a 7.5 out of 10. Points taken away for lack of originality, but for an obviously derivitive work its pretty damned good.

Yikes, dude. You've really got to use the search.

Before we know it you'll have duplicated every topic on the board.

I think this addition to the Masters of Horror series is way, way overrated in the horror community. It was good, yes, but not as great as it seems everyone is making it out to be. Perhaps just because it comes from John Carpenter, or because it's a different tone then the rest of the series. Who knows.

I liked the film itself, but it wasn't any special. I really didn't like the whole demon-attached-to-film thing. It made it seem lame and fake. Like some fantasy story. If it was just about a film that was so horrific and powerful, without any "demonic presence" or "demons attached", I would have liked it a lot better. I also agree they shouldn't have shown the film. Just the characters reactions to watch it.

I also found their reactions, what it did show, to be slightly... unrealisitic aswell. They should have looked MORE horrified, shocked, startled, terrified. They should have been on the verge of tears.

I'd give it a 7.5/10, it was a good little story, but I found it to have some things wrong with it.
