Oh Shit ! What did I just do ??!!!!

There is something other that a good scary film that can induce waves of horror. Give you that 'I have ice water running down my spine and my bowels just turned into a nursery school for rattlesnakes' feeling.

And thats having a right fuck up at work .. courtesy of yourself.
Have you ever screwed up large .. where either you lost your job because of it, or couldnt believe you didnt get fired ?

I'm not talking about something stupid you did on purpose, something completely by accident.

For example: .. many years ago when the work force was full of terminals attached to a mainframe (no PCs) i was working as a computer operator for a large company.
At the end of each week before the Friday night backups were run my job was to delete the junk files - the mainframe version of windows temp files.
This one Friday night before the xmas holidays I cleaned out the junk files (class J files).
Traditionally the week before xmas people work harder than usual to finish up year end jobs, etc so they dont have to come in between xmas and new years. (this is important to the story)

So the last thing i do 4:0pm Friday night is type the command :
del class J all.
I had done it a million times before but for some reason this time i added 'all' which was accepted as another argument.
I deleted class J then every other file in the work area. In otherwords .. every file anyone had worked on in the past week.
I didnt realize till i checked to see how much space i had cleared up ... and saw that it was a hell of a lot more than usual.
I nearly puked... i had a couple of the older guys cover for me .. who basically said .. dont say shit to anyone and get the hell out of here.

I have no idea how much $$$ I cost the company .. i felt bad then but i guess 25 years later .. its kind of funny.

I'd love to hear if anyone else there has had a nice royal fuck up like that ..

If you're in school - it might be there or at home that you screwed up ...

I'd love to know i'm not alone on this one ...

merry xmas.

I know the feeling you are talking about. It is similar to the 'shit, did i just lock my keys in the car\house?' shiver.

I have never done anything that bad.

Although a couple of years ago I was working as a Desktop Support person. My first IT job straight out of TAFE.

Anyway, I went into the server room around midday to do something and could hear a constant beeping. I searched around the room and noticed that it was coming from one of the UPS's (I assume you all know what that is).

Anyway, I thought about it for a second and came to the conclusion that UPS's just kick in if a power failure ever occurs and decided to turn it off and then back on again to stop the damn beeping noise that was coming from it.

So I turned it off and then back on and looked for the cable that I originally went in there for, when my boss bursts through the door and asks what just happened.

I told him what I did and he quickly explained by doing what I did that I had just shut down all print and file servers for the whole site. And explained that all the power for the servers run THROUGH the power supply. You turn it off and you turn them off.

There was no major damage caused, but just very embarrassing.

I've not had any an major misshaps like yours, but a few minor ones, like assuring n00b pc users that their latest sensitive data would be safe on a seperate partition during a format, so told them no need to make numerous amounts of gig backups at that time....

....then after lunch proceeded to format the wrong or all of the partitions. Hence they wernt amused.

Well, I was working at a local newspaper...not my dream position -- mind you, but still...it was paying the bills (kinda). But anyway, I called off of work for like a week and I kept telling my boss it was an absessed tooth (cause that has happened to me already and it kept me out a week).

Well, I was actually in Florida on a spur of the moment road trip, and my co-workers were calling me saying that my boss was getting suspicious about my absence, so by the time I got back...my boss called me into the office and stupid guy here, just flat-out told her the truth. "I was in Florida interviewing for a job."

And to top it off...that same week, my boss had to install a new program in my computer, and I had a burned CD in the drive aptly titled, "It's Summer, Mother Fucker...and I'm a Giddy Idiot!"

LOL!

My boss had it laying out on my desk when I got back. Sooooo, anyway, I was let go toward the end of the week.

Well, it's not like I did anything to royally fuck the company...but I figured I'd chime in to teach everyone a lesson to always stick with your original lie, no matter how much of the truth you think they know.

:D

The worst i can remember presently was when i took my car around a corner faster than i should have when it was slick out.....and my tires had NO tread on them....

It felt like i was still connected to the pavement until my tachometer was steadly rising, i was like WTF? then the rear driver side tire started to go into the oncomming trafic lane....i over corrected and spun a 90* turn.....so i was then parralell to the street....

My front in was in the oncomming lane and my back end was in my lane and the median line was dividing my car in half really.....

So i slid that way for about 75 feet or so and then slowed down enough to spin a FULL 360 in the wrong lane and stop....

I slammed the brakes so hard it stalled the car, WITH the clutch in, explain that one to me.....i, and the car, escaped without a scratch tho.....but i was shaking for the whole next week....

nothing major,

i was working at car showroom, driving the cars in and out, odd jobs etc; someone had just bought a shiny new black honda and i was asked to drive it to the front of the showroom.

no probs, however little old me forgot that at the entrance to the showroom where two iron railings (either side of the door); i was driving the car out of the showroom and heard a soft screeching sound.
I wonder what that could be?

I went back into the showroom and carried on with other work. A few minuted later the manager came in and asked me "Do you know what you just did?

"Nope", well lets just say the brand new shiny black honda, was now a shiny new black honda with a lovely silver line which ran the full length of the car!

Concerning the universe.

AREA: infinite.
The Hitchickers guide to the galaxy provides this definition of the word infinite.
Bigger than the biggest thing ever and then some. Much bigger than that in fact, really amazingly immense, a totally stunning size, real "wow thats big," time. Infinity is just so big that, by comparison, bigness itself looks really quite titchy. Gigantic multiplied by colossal multiplied by staggeringly huge is the sort of concept were trying to get across here.

IMPORTS: none
It is impossible to import things into an infinite area, there being no outside to import things in from.

EXPORTS: none
(see imports)

Being superannuated (61) I've had a lot of time to perform embarrasing fuck-ups.

But the worst I remember happened about 49 years ago.

My Aunt had a new 1954 Chrysler which I decided to wash to acquire a little spending money.

So I got out the powdered laundry soap, sprinkled the dry soap on the wet car--and promptly added 20 years aging to the Peacock Blue Metallic paint job.

The car turned a DULL grey, the driveway turned blue, and my ass turned red!
