A Wichita woman was arrested after biting off part of her boyfriend's tongue when he tried to kiss and make up after a fight, Wichita police said.

Police said the man was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge after being treated at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus.

Police spokeswoman Janet Johnson said a witness called 911 shortly before 9 p.m. on Monday to report that a 21-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were fighting in a hallway of an apartment building at 206 E. 18th St.

When officers arrived, they learned that the man had pushed the woman and caused some minor scratches, Johnson said. Johnson said officers reported that the woman bit off "a good portion" of the man's tongue during his attempted kiss.

Johnson said the piece of tongue was found and taken with the man to the hospital.

Although officers initially said that doctors tried to reattach the tongue, hospital officials would not confirm his medical treatment, citing privacy issues.

The woman was arrested at the scene and booked on a felony aggravated battery charge. The man was arrested at the hospital at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and booked on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge.

Lt. Tom Bridges said detectives will meet with prosecutors today to determine what charges would be filed.
