Saw 3/4 does it really compare to the classics in gore?

I thought Saw 3 was meh, but I went to BloodGutsandGore and Saw 3 only hit 6 out of 10 on the scale.

I doubt Saw 4 will get much higher, prolly a point up or two.

But these movies are still beat by movies like Dead Alive which topped the scale at 26 out of 10. Or Cannibal Holocaust and ferox which got about 15 out of 10.

Theres also other movies like Ichi the Killer, The Evil Dead, etc.

Do the Saw movies really compare to these guys in gore?

I'd say they compare in quality but not quantity. Saw 3's limb twisting scene and the cold room were both pretty cool. Saw 4 had a pretty good autopsy. I wouldn't say they're the goriest but I think they deliver in terms of quality, modern gore. Ichi was gory but the bad cgi ruined a few key moments.

i would actually say the opposite: the saw movies have a good quantity of gore, but the quality of the films doesn't compare to the classics. the saw films definitely have some nice gore scenes, but overall they feel mostly hollow. not to mention every one of them has had an annoying and forced "twist" at the end (except the first one, that was pretty impressive). i haven't seen the fourth one yet, so i can't speak for it, but i really feel the saw films are overrated, as is this whole new pop-fascination with "torture films," and i really believe they're doing more bad than good for the horror genre in general. they lack creativity (other than the torture methods, i guess), and continue to bring down people's expectations for horror.

as for ichi: definitely a good film but yeah, the bad cgi does make just a couple parts a little hard to believe.

Why do the cops always have to get involved in the saw movies?

Less cops and more Gore! And less Jigsaw!

The Saw movies are pretty with gore as far as big Hollywood movies go (Can't compare to the older cult classics). Obviously, they can't push it too much or they would get slapped with the dreaded NC-17 rating and that would kill it in terms of $$$ made.

Well, according to BGG (Blood guts and gore),

the list of movies that made it higher and outgored/beat the Saw series in gore were,

Dead Alive
Cannibal Holocaust, Ferox
Ichi the Killer
The Evil Dead

And a few more I think that I cant remember at the moment, id have to look again. Though some movies came pretty close to beating Saw 3.

Saw 3 beat some movies by little, like Evil Dead 2. Saw 3 beat Evil Dead 2 by 1 point.

But the movies I mentioned above completely took out the Saw movies on the scale.

I have no doubt they aren't the goriest movies ever... That's just a stupid argument!

I'm talking visual quality only. The Saw series used some old school effects mixed with today's techniques and provided some very clean gore without using a lot of really bad CGI. Some of the least gory moments of the movies are the most memorable though, I know at least three people who think the worst thing in all four movies was the needle pit.

I think the obvious CGI in Ichi suits the Manga cartoon-esque action, and general look of the film.
