Evil Dead Rating Question

Ive only seen this movie one time last year and maybe I missed something. From what I remember there wasn't anything in it worth a NC-17 rating, barely even an R rating. I heard it was originally rated-x and is banned in many countries. What is so ridiculous about this film thats getting it this rating? I don't understand MPAA rating a movie X because of gore....am I missing something?

The white liquid that often emits from the possessed after injured or maimed is 2% milk that Sam Raimi chose to incorporate, not to show how these aren't normal beings, but also to mix it up so the MPAA wouldn't give it an X rating.-imdb.com
You lost me. Sounds like your saying this was rated X because of milk.

I don't know, but I would guess it might have something to do with the girl being raped by the tree branch scene. Also, if you think about the standards for rating then vs. now, if you replace all of that milk (I never knew that's what it was) with blood it would have been pretty darn gorey for then.

Go back and watch it again. Then think about the film from the perspective of someone who hasn't been desensitized like us.

It's pretty fucking relentless.

Back then this was the movie which had such an impact on audiences that they didnt dare see it either in the theaters or on video. 20 years later the effects might look jaded but in those days, it was the scariest movie ever made.
