Unhappy looking for film, old black and white horror

i remember i was up late one night, i switched to sbs, and there was this horror movie where a women was being sacrficed or something, she had been tied to a big wooden pole surrounded by these hooded people with flaming torches and the usual ritualistic scenery, and she screamed in a desperate scared foriegn language (russian?) the subtitles said something like, "i will take revenge on you, i will place a curse..." and so on
THEN they put a metal mask on her, then they smash the mask into her face with a big mallet, and blood comes out of the eyes and mouth of the mask..

i would really appreciate it if someone could tell me the name of this film!

Hmm, I don't recognize it... it's probably a witch movie (Haunted!)...

Do you have any idea what decade it was?

I'm fairly certain it was The Great Gatsby.

That's the one, for sure. The art direction of this one heavily influenced Tim Burton's style - it's beautiful

It belongs on any top 100 horror list, I'd say. And in the collections of most horror lovers.
