Maybe...split peas???
aka Lentils.
Very nice if prepared right, VERY VERY good for you, and quite filling too.

You going with reds or greens?

One more thing...since you're gonna talk food - what the fuck is so good about this "quay lime pie" I keep hearing about...in fact, I don't even know WHAT it is.
Anyone tried one?

Im not using lentels Im using split peas, soup veggies, and some veggie stock I made with extra love. a couple of spices and a few herbs. really simple really basic no meat.

do you mean key lime pie? back in the day when florida was being settled trains where like the only way to get down into the keys and this hurricane hit taking out tracks and a route for shipments to make it out to the islands. Limes and pelicans where pretty much every where as where other things like bananas and coconuts blah blah ANYWAYS this pie was made in the weeks that folwed the storm made from limes condensed milk and pelican eggs. pelican eggs are not used any more but key lime pie is like one of the most popular deserts starting around here in my next of the woods all the way down to the southern most tip of the states in key west florida.

I'm surprised...I get what you mean now (after a little research) about not using lentils.
It's another one of those culturally different things. Here, there's 2 "main" varieties of the same thing, lentils, and what you'd call split peas are very similar, no?
Just like the corriander/cilantro thing, different names on very similar things. Here, we don't use the term "split peas", just lentils, but different varieties.
What you're talking about is the slightly more bulky (?greenish?) coloured ones, no?
Either way, the sou made from either is fucking awesome, one of my favourite vegetarian dishes.

Ah so it's KEY not Quay...righto, had never seen the spelling...
Well, thanks for the history lesson, but...is it REALLY all that?
Hit me up with a recipe, I'll make one.

well since I don't think you want to make 12 of them Im going to cut and paste you one from all recipes

INGREDIENTS:
5 egg yolks, beaten
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup key lime juice
1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Combine the egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk and lime juice. Mix well. Pour into unbaked graham cracker shell.
Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Allow to cool. Top with whipped topping and garnish with lime slices if desired.

just do a touch test make sure the center is firm and the pie will set itself as it cools.

key limes are tart and sweet. I like them, I would rather have chocolate though.

I wonder how chocolate would go with lime...I suppose if it were zest only it may not curdle...hmmm...
Thankyou for the recipe.

I have never baked a key lime pie. I always just mix the ingredients and pop it in the fridge until it "sets" and then put the topping on it. What you're hinting at, Barb, sounds like a cheese cake, but I guess it isn't. hmm.

Neat...a new way to make key lime pie.
