Movie conventions you would like to see go

I am watching Firewall right now, and all in all, it is a good movie, however, it has something that I am absolutely sick and tired of in hostage movies.

The kid with allergy/athsma. I know, they use it to add a fold of tension to the whole thing, but jesus, EVERY movie uses it... Firewall, Trapped, Panic Room, the list goes on. ENough with the sickly kids and come up with something original.

Any oher conventions that are used into the ground?

Defending children in general is frequently used as a tension builder.

Defending them is one thing, defending children who will die if they are exposed to peanuts, or if they get stressed is overused and boring. Oh yeah, SIgns used it too. Yet another reason to hate shyamalama-ding-dong

I dunno...I haven't seen his last one...most I've seen were average not terrible (although the same trick at the end of nearly every film got old), but then, I really liked unbreakable a lot.

What I think is a bit overdone these days is horror/thriller movies with "hopeless" endings where everyone dies...it's DONE to death...

Well, The Sixth Sense was brilliant, and unbreakable was good. Signs wasnt half bad.

The village was shit. Come to think of it, here are some more conventions:

Forced plot twists. When you can guess the ending, it isnt a twist, it is an attempt at a twist.

The director showing p in his own movie. For some reason, when Peter Jackson shows up in one o fhis movies, i think it is clever, but when night whatever does it, he come soff as an arrogant fuck hole. I dont particularly care for Eli roths movies, but he is goo denough to keep his cameos small

I agree to an extent, but I do think it's sometimes necessary for the horror genre that everyone die.

Another one, "Real" movies where the movie ends with no resolution. Drives me batshit. Spanglish comes to mind immediately. There is no ending, no loose ends tied up, just life goes on. if i want that, i will pay attention to my neighbors

I agree. Mother instinct be damned. If they're holding me up, they've gotta go.

...

Something that bothers me is the 2-dimensional and/or weak female character. Though this archetype definitely is starting to get better, it's something that has bothered me for a very long time. I grew up purely identifying with the male characters in movies simply because they were stronger, funnier, more interesting, etc. I had a difficult time even believing that a girl character could be strong and worthy of idolatry.

A lot of the strong female leads that you see are essentially super women. Consider Ripley of Alien or The Bride of Kill Bill. Cherry Darling of Planet Terror. Sure, they're strong. In fact, they're AWESOME... But what about the Plain Jane hero.

The Dude's a regular Joe hero of The Big Lebowski. And Lester Burnam is the everyman of American Beauty. You don't see as many of those Everyman characters in female leads.

I'd like to see more.

...

Re: M. Night Shyamalan. I find him INCREDIBLY over-rated. I thought that the Sixth Sense was fantastic. Unbreakable, for me, was a huge disappointment (great in concept, but the writing was ABYSMAL... Then again, I was drunk when I saw it... but BOY did it sober me up)... Signs was FANTASTIC until he decided to be a moron DICK and show the alien (what sort of neophyte IS he!), oh and the whole sudden FATE and GOD overtones... Made me want to vomit. The Village I have not seen sober... But from what I've heard it's pretty awful... Oh, and Lady in the Water was laughably bad.

He's actually a fairly good director. It's the writing that gets really weak. Signs was directed well. But it was the CONTENT that pissed me off.

I'm getting tired of all the guys in these movies being pussies and the girls end up being the hero.

Never happen....not in newb's macho world.
