John Carpenter quits directing?

John Carpenter had some interesting things to say in an interview in a local magazine:

Question: There are rumors they're planning a remake of your biggest classic 'Halloween' in Hollywood?
Carpenter: They didn't ask me. They did ask me if I would be interested in a monstermovie where Pinhead from Hellraiser would battle with Candyman. It would be something like Freddy vs Jason. I kindly declined.

Question: In a recent interview you have complained that you barely get any work in Hollywood. You even threatened to retire and only smoke dope & watch porn from now on.
Carpenter: I meant that half-ironically. But I admit: It isn't as fun as it used to be. I'm not planning on making any more movies, unless someone gives me a fortune.

I could care less.

Like I said, his only good movies were Halloween and The Fog. How many years ago was that? Over two decades?

In my opinion, he quit making "good" horror movies years ago.

I never liked much of his work expecially his films on Vampires but I am also picky on vampire films. Anyway I doubt I would even do a Candyman v.s. Pinhead movie... I hate when they do that! UGH! I hated Freddy v.s. Jason... But anyway I hope this isn't so true. Some of his work was pretty good but then again that was his older works.

Thumbs down Bye-bye, John

Well, I guess we say goodbye to John, then. Nobody's gonna pay him that "fortune" he wants for the kind of shlock he's puked across screens his last few tries.

I thought "The Thing" was great also, though.

I don't think some of you guys are giving ole Carpenter the respect he deserves. Of course, he is one of my all-time fav. directors though and he certainly had more than two good movies. Ever hear of The Thing or In the Mouth of Madness? How about Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, and Christine? Not to mention his non-genre efforts: Assault on Precinct 13, Escape from New York/L.A. If he is finished directing, he's left us a damn fine body of films.

"Big trouble in little China" was indeed a great movie, but it wasn't really horror.
My problem with Carpenter's movies is that in too many cases, he seems to get tired of the process and tries to hurry up and finish his projects. They usually seem to fall flat, and the plot loosens near the end. There are several exceptions though.
