Ah, I got ya. Things people say or what we read most assuredly effect our directions.
The getting thrown out of class for questioning a metaphysical position still surprises me. Curious, when the instructor threw you out of class, what did you actually say (or do)?
In my head, just imagining,
Instructor: "Humans have souls, and animals do not."
Elvis: "Teacher? Isn't it possible animals have souls?"
Instructor: "Elvis! Report to the principals office!"
That scenario would really shock me. Did it go down like that? Or were there more appreciable reasons?
