I really don't know. To me, it's just hard to believe that aliens are "among us" or whatever you want to say about them. I find it much easier to believe in ghosts and monsters, for some reason.
In my mind, including aliens is kind of lazy writing. Aliens can do anything, so if you need something to happen, that couldn't possibly happen in real life, throwing an alien in there makes it plausible.
I fully realize this is flawed logic, and my rational mind tells me that, but I can't help it.
Aliens in scifi or outer space = ok
Aliens on earth interfering in human affairs = dumb
