Just seems the producers/writers have tried too hard to make this a modernized tale featuring the Headless Horseman. At one point he uses an assault rifle (and I think, also a shotgun in another scene). Since when did the Headless Horseman learn who to use an assault rifle?! Come on!
Well since in this story the Horseman is supposed to be one of the four horseman of the apocalypse, i think it's safe to say he wouldn't be restricted by the knowledge of the time period in which he existed when he fought Ichabod. He's much more then just some ghost, he can learn and adapt. Which will make him a formidable opponent for Ichabod who needs to learn how the world has changed. I think it's fine that they're including those elements because like it or not, it is a modernized tale.
