First of all, I’d like to thank V for naming me president last year. It was an honor and a privilege and I wish I could have been around to perform more of my duties. I had a lot on my plate and 2011 was not a good year for me. I wish I could have shared your joy and your fun in 2011. I spent much of 2011 maneuvering around the horror and weird fiction communities. Still in service to the genre, still hoping to make sure there was better art for everybody that had the culture and vision to appreciate it. A lot of people don’t. They see there’s a new crappy remake being shoved down their throat and they shell out their eleven dollars, thinking they have no options. HDC is not about that. HDC is about how fans have power and significance and can make life better. By giving those who love horror somewhere where they don’t have to be alone and by standing up for the culture they want. What I learned these past couple of years as a small press novelist is very similar to what I learned at HDC. I learned that I don’t have to watch bad movies or read bad books and that when people put their money and their passion behind good movies and good books, then life gets better. Y Keep on doing this. Keep putting your energy behind the things you care about and you’ll see more like it, or you’ll see art you never thought you would. Many of the artists who make the independent films or write the books we enjoy are very approachable and want to hear from you. They care that you stand up for that work, they care that you love it or hate it or wish it was longer or whatever. Tell them in your tweets, your Facebook posts and your forum posts. We are not just people bitching on the internet. We have power. And if we use it right and if we keep this a place where we use this power to make people smarter, happier and more well informed, then it will grow and our lives will only continue to get better.
