They show it vertical, like in Guitar Hero, but guitarists who are used to practice with tabs are used to practice it horizontal, which makes sense as this is normally the angle you hold your guitar....

Actually, at the bottom of the screen you get a representation of the fretboard that is like tabs (you can even flip it upside down so it is just like a tab).
The notes come down the "highway" to end up on the fretboard at the bottom. It sounds a bit strange, but it actually works well. Watch some Youtubes of it in action.
