Why can't you have to things that are very similar but altered to be something new? I understand your point, I just feel The Vanishing attempt was a failure. I don't automatically hate all remakes; I just get VERY concerned when a filmmaker says he's going to make a more 'upbeat' version of a classic film. That's normally not a good sign.
