Sugarhouse (2007). This was a twisted punch-gut crime drama centering on two worlds that never should have come together, let alone collided. Even worse, we come to see with our own eyes how prejudiced we truly are. The acting was powerful, where even minor players give standout performances. Ashley Walters created a standout portrayal of his character, maintaining a paroxysm of body undulations only dulled by intense moments of heartfelt empathy. Andy Serkis' poorly checked underlying rage was palpable, and Steven Mackintosh's desperation was appropriate as his plight was finally revealed. The story itself was almost eclipsed by these performances, a gritty tale that most readers will only experience on the silver screen. The result was an unexpected emotional thunderbolt that struck deeper than tears. Merci beaucoup.
