Wow, that's a fantastic article. Really sums up a lot of the things I couldn't put my finger on.
Great closing paragraph:

I’d love to see the expression on the face of the alien archaeologist (portrayed by Bronson Pinchot) when he views the film, sizing up the human race based solely on the lonely and baffling rituals of its strange inhabitants. Even if Salò could somehow exist in a hypothetical cultural void, no one who watches it with creeping unease can help but be instinctually alarmed by the palpable absence of something crucial from within our modern trappings...humanity."
