A lushly Gothic melodrama abound with themes of social class where Price totally inhabits the persona of Nicholas Van Ryn, symbolizing his proud, valiant strength, and ultimately portraying his breakdown into weakness, drug addiction, and murder.
Dragonwyck is definitely worth a look for fans of Vincent Price. It's like Price's somewhat of a warm-up performance for becoming the master of macabre in his later glorious career. Price made a beautiful classy movie-pair with Gene Tierney. Both are great with their roles, but it is Price who shines the most. This well-produced, pure Gothic atmospheric piece from Mankiewicz also features a strong supporting casts including Miranda's bible-thumping father played by Walter Huston, her mother (Anne Revere) and last but not the least Glenn Langan played the role of Dr. Jeff Turner.
