Thats a pretty scathing review, K. I thought the film was awesome. Bale and Depp were just right for their characters - Bale put up a solid portrayal of someone torn between two choices and eventually going with the tougher one, and Depp was very, very iconic in his portrayal of Dillinger. Mann knew exactly where his two powerhouse performers were, and he used them very concisely and intelligently throughout the script which was pacy, intelligent and explosive (when needed).
The only gripe (if one has to be VERY picky) would be the camerawork which was sometimes too close for comfort and zoomed in unnecessarily in plenty of shots. Otherwise, its a very good, solid film. Mann has outdone himself with this.
I still recommend it highly to everyone else. Watch it and form your own opinions.
