I took Derek to the ER today and there was a 10 year old kid who just found out he was diabetic across the curtain from us. He was asking all sorts of questions about what he can and cannot eat. Had to cut down on rice and potatoes and other carbs, plus close to no sugar or candy. He was so sad, broke my heart.
I know I can live without sugar. When I had my braces, I didn't eat any sugar at all for 3 years. Didn't really miss it, because there are always alternatives. Sugar free pop, carob in stead of chocolate, a lot of candy made with splenda. (Not a huge price difference either, if you know where to look. ) Now that I have my braces off I still prefer a low sugar diet. Putting sugar in my tea or eating a high cocoa percentage chocolate is the most sugar I eat. Sweet foods do make me happy, but I'll have an apple usually when I'm down.
