I agree. But I keep watching it, so at least it's successful in that sense of word.
The show is definitely flawed. I always thought that Eliza Dushku was limited as an actress (though hot as hell), and this role is definitely slightly beyond her reach. As mentioned, the formula (of "active" and "protector") is painfully reminiscent of Buffy, so Whedon isn't attempting to create new territory.
HOWEVER
The concept is interesting to me and I am fascinated to see where the plot and story is going. I think that the acting is pretty weak (both Eliza Dushku and Tahmoh Penikett included; I think he's great in BGS, but he's a bit two-dimensional), but yet
I can't stop watching. LOL
I guess this has become my new guilty pleasure. I know that it's not a perfect show, but it appeals to the scifi nut in me and it's just
different enough from everything else on television to keep me interested. I honestly want to see where the show it going, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, to tell you the truth. I compare how I feel about this show to how I felt about Dark Angel; fantastic premise, weak acting and writing, but I still watch it every week.
Do I think it could be better? Sure. But I'm still watching it.
