i'm trying to arrange to start seeing the critically acclaimed films but have only seen one of the big 'indie' hits so far . . .

but, it was amazing - so I'll say SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE - danny boyle's indian fairy tale was a great example of indie filmmaking - complex plot structure, great acting, unique intercultural vibe, etc. the film, for those who haven't heard about it, tells the story of a young indian man who grew up in the abject poverty of a mumbai slum and is heading for the 20 million ruppee (which is like a million dollars) on their version of who wants to be a millioniare. As he is questoined about how he could know all the answers, we learn his life story and all the odd twists of fate that has brought him here. wrapped around this plot are brotherly love, betrayal, and a touching story of true love.

this is one i walked out of the theater feeling happier than when i'd gone in so it gets my nod at the moment.

next up for me are: milk, gran torino and - if i can find a theater with it - the wrestler.

and on the dk front - i liked that film and thought it was very smart for what it was - but i'll stand by my bold prediction - it will not get a best picture nomination and, in fairness, probably doesn't deserve one.
