I suppose it could have been a publicity stint. I mean who is going to want to go back onstage when there is a chance someone is out to get you, not to mention you just slit your own throat.
I just imagine he would be making a quick motion at it, to make it look real and the prop knife would have retracted when he did so. I am hoping it was real because that's a really smart plot to kill someone.
