I can see why 2001 fans would hate this and tout it as something which pisses all over the original, but Peter Hyams has done a commendable job handling the intricacies of Kubrick's eccentric visions and giving a plausible explanations to the finer points of the predecessor. It is not genuis filmmaking, nor is it a masterpiece, but its right up there with the finest in sci-fi cinema.
If ever there was an unsung and under-appreciated sci-fi flick in the history of Hollywood, this one is arguably pretty close to being a contender to that title. Highly recommended to all sci-fi lovers out there, who will love watching this with an open mind.
