Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer

Little disappointed with this one. With the delightfully campy title and over-the-top movie poster I had high hopes for this one. It SCREAMS Evil Dead II meets Dead Alive, but doesn't necessarily do a particularly good job emulating either.

That said, the beasties were simply awesome and I was impressed at its purposeful use of animatronic special effects to create its gruesome big bad. It also had some fantastic gory kills to go along with it.

However, it took waaaaay too long to actually bring the monster onslaught and it almost lost me as a viewer. In terms of modern monster movies, Slither did it better.

I give it a 2.5/5

The Cottage

Obviously heavily influenced by Severance (incidentally, another film to come from Isle of Man Film Company), The Cottage started out slowly (TOO slowly), but then turned into a pretty damn good urbanoia mutant slasher film. Not perfect (Hatchet and Severance did it better), but definitely thoroughly enjoyable toward the end.

I give it 3/5.
