I'm going to have a difficult time answering this without sounding incredibly melodramatic...
Optimism is pointless and unrealistic.
I find reality horrifying and, ironically, use horror movies as pure escapism. I
fantasize about the zombie apocalypse.
What I find horrifying:
- People (what we're capable of, what I'm capable of, what they're capable of - genocide, pedophilia, torture, misogyny, racism xenophobia, intolerance, violence, murder, rape, destruction, anger)
- Ignorance (leads to the above)
- Politics, failing economy, ozone layer, Wars, poverty, disease, hunger, megalomania, sociopathology.
THE HORRORS.
What an individual is capable of doing to another individual - Pure acts of evil, desecration, violation...
Evil is real. It's not some sort of super-natural God-made thing (or Devil-made thing or whatever Being that Some attribute Evil to). WE create Evil and we revel in it.
And, even MORE horrifying... Good can only come from US.
*shudder*
...
And on THAT cheery note, I think I'm going to go crawl back into my hole.
