Check out Greyhound. I use them to get to my boyfriend's residence and back and they are pretty cheap. If you buy your ticket the day before departure you can get an even better deal or use your student card for a discount.
Also, to cut costs you could find a campsite or stay at a church or hostel instead of renting a room. Hostels are much much cheaper than hotels.
I checked out Greyhound for ya, a rount trip ticket from Newark to Minneapollis without discounts is $304 There's also a hostel in Minneapolis near the bus line that's $26 per night
