Neverwinter Nights: Diamond.

I got Neverwinter Nights 2 a while ago and was totally enthralled. So I thought I would get the original to get some of the background/history.

Anyway, installed it on my machine, and it seemed to be working fine until I tried to load a game that was saved when I was in the Docks district. My computer just hung, had to shut NWN down.

I thought it was probably a Vista incompatibility, so I grabbed another hard drive and installed XP to dual boot with. Under XP the problems were worse - the latest Nvidia drivers don't work at all with this game (just get a black screen) so I installed an older driver. Now I could play, but the same problem occured as in Vista. Eventually (through lots of searching and some trial and error) got it to work by turning off some graphics features.

Annoying to think that the same solution may have worked under Vista. But the game itself is great. The story is not quite as enthralling as NWN 2, but it is early days yet. Makes me want to play the pen and paper Dungeons & Dragons (which I haven't touched for about 20 years).
