I think WHEN you started smoking has something to do with it. Those who start young seem to stunt the development of their cognative abilities. They burn out thier neural pathways before their brain has had a chance to fully develop. Same with kids who start drinking to young.
I never smoked in my youth. I was a Regan-era "just say no" kid who really thought that all drugs are bad and will kill you. I didn't start smoking weed until I was in my twenties. I used to be stressed-out with stomach ulcers and was on prozac. I hated that pharmeceutical crap. Who really wants an equivilent of an emotional straitjacket?
Weed works better (on me at least) I'm happier, less stressed and my stomach's completely healed.
And few things in life can compare to the joy of a good case of the giggles:D

You seem to have the opposite issue with writing that i do. If i go for hours on end writing, i come out of it completely burned out, usually unable to hold thoughts together and become very passive. That is where video game sand beer come in handy. Beer forces me to focus (because let's face it, when you are buzzed, you HAVE to focus on one thing, which is why drivign drunk is stupid), and the games allow me to not think. It is very theraputic, and fuels a lot of my creativity, which is good that i work in cycles like that.
Programming does the same thing, after 8 hours of trying to fix problems, debugging, trying to find the cleanest way of doing something, and god forbid i have to research something, i am pretty much a clean slate, except the last thing i want to do is play on a computer.
