The Covenant

I did do a search for this here but didnt find anything. Not sure how long its been out for US etc, but I just saw it here in england, so heres my personal review on it:

Wow...This movie was truly terrible.

I won't just leave my feelings and not explain my reasoning however, so here goes:

Just because its a 12A (or whatever rating it was for other countries) doesnt mean that the dialogue should of been written by a 12 year old, it really is quite awful. Theres lots of moments where characters will just pause, as if they are remembering their lines, and then other moments when they respond immediately making it obvious they've re-done that particular scene about 10 times. Also it was evident that some parts were majorly re-dubbed, probably because the actors had trouble speaking and standing at the same time, so they had to re-record it whilst they were sat down in a studio.

The characters are completely unbelievable, not once did I notice any spark between actors, and therefore no in-movie rapport between characters, the whole interaction seemed laboured. There was also little continuity in the way of character personalities, all of which were fickle and weak.

For a 12A (Rating for it here in England), the amount of nudity, and particulary male nudity was greatly over-used. It was evident to me that the film was aimed at 14 year old girls, and the male actors were only hired for their 6-packs. Bravo...But perhaps they should of gone to more acting classes than the gym all the time.

The premise of the movie, whilst being done before (more successfully) in films like "The Craft" is an okay idea, but ultimately this movie executes it poorly, and the whole frat-boy feel will probably bore you quickly, and make you despise them more so than you already might.

I heard this movie described as a modern day take on "The Lost Boys" but I wouldnt recommend describing it like that to anyone, because it will give you false conceptions of how the movie is going to be, and also insults the great 80's movie.

1.5/5
