I would say the trigger of modern (i.e. Islamic) terrorism is the emergence of the USA as the one and only superpower and its interference with the rest of the world.
I personally do not have a problem with America pushing other countries about (some of them probably need it), but I can see why folk in certain affected countries might have.
Of course, blowing things up and murdering lots of people isn't a very fair retaliation.
