A healthy self hatred is alright...keeps one striving to improve, if the dissatisfaction is genuine, it could only be reflective of how a person really sees themself...the desire and effort to change have to start somewhere, and there's no better critic than from within. I hate being in nearly all pictures because all I see is bad...or at least mostly.
Other than that, if the whole deal is not quite genuine, it's either supposedly subtle/passive way to fish for a compliment, or more of a defense mechanism for the low of self esteem, getting ones self ready for potential negative feedback by exposing themselves to it early in the process.
It's more often than not unneccessary...a persons physical state isn't really something that should be others business to personally review to the person in question anyways.
The only opinion in such things that SHOULD matter is your own...and if there's something you interperit as needing improvement, work on it until YOU'RE happy, Fuck the rest.
