I really dig Rob Zombie.
I agree with you about pits like that. True hardcore metal fans usual don't do shit like what you described.
Eg. I was moshing at a Cannibal Corpse show, and I hit the floor. I landed right on my elbow and busted it open pretty badly. The entire pit stopped and helped me up. Then two big guys asked me if I needed any help out. I said I was fine, so they went right on back to moshing.
