It's a peculiar mixture, to be sure. Let's see... the best way to describe them... you've heard Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, right? Imagine if Nick Cave were actually from the South, instead of just wishing he was, and had become obsessed with country/bluegrass rather than Delta blues and gospel. Make sense?
