Heroin addiction, dead babies...zombies look kinda tame in comparison. Not a horror movie, but really good. For really good slasher movies you should check out Dario Argento. Opera, Trauma (a little weaker but still cool) and Tenebre have some amazing kills and the guy knows how to use color and set pieces. Frighteningly erotic and gutwrenching occurs really well and often in Necromantik. It's a rare find and more cash than anybody should shell out for the VHS copy, but that will blow your mind. Saw is also really solid and well executed gore. When it comes to horror movies, if you stray away from Hollywood you'll find some kickass stuff.
Wow, a Danny Boyle fan and an Argento fan? Those are two of my favorite directors. Trainspotting and Tenebre are two of my favorite films. Good recommendations there.:D
