i thought he was bitten by zombies, it wasnt shown but it was implied
when he was shot, the zombies were already taking over the house, thats why he told the girl to leave...the zombies probably bit him while he was lying there dying......he couldnt exactly fight them off in his wounded state..and by the time the girl came back he was a zombie
